PBL Peacmakers

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are olive branches, Doves, and the CND sign.

These symbols represent peace because of their backstories. For example, the CND sign represents peace because in WWII it was used to signal victory by allied nations. The olive branch represents peace because it was a sign from God that he had stopped the flooding in 1600 BCE. Doves were also used during this flooding, the dove was the one carrying this olive branch, to signal that there was land nearby.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork represents peace because it contains three recognizable peace symbols.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Jesus. I thought he was a champion of peace because he is the son of God himself. He has created many miracles, and rose up to heaven.

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it gave me more understanding of how I can be peaceful myself in my everyday life.

I learnt that it might be harder then it looks to be a peace maker, but as long as you know how to be peaceful, than you can achieve it.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by thinking before I act. Anytime I feel myself getting angry I will use techniques to calm myself down, such as taking deep breaths, or just removing myself from the situation.

How do you show peace? Make sure to let me know!

Tile Patterns

Hello, and welcome back to my blog! This week, my hub and I are starting a new area in maths. This is Geometry: Transformations & Positions and Orientation. We have been challenged to create a symmetrical floor tile pattern, with six different shapes and colours. Symmetrical is something that looks the exact same on both sides when cut down the middle from top to bottom, or side to side. I have chosen each colour because they are each complementary colours. This means that they are opposites on the colour wheel, and they look good together! For example, Red and dark green are complementary colours, so are yellow and purple, orange and blue, and Light green and pink. This is what I have created!

Have you ever created a tile pattern? Make sure to let me know!

Porridge Poster

Kia ora! Welcome back to my blog! Recently, my school has decided to host a play called porridge. This play is about a detective who is trying to find out where the latest crime wave has come from. The play consists of many fairy tale characters,  including Goldie Locks, Mama, Papa and Junior Bear, Humpty dumpty and more. I have decided to take part in this play, and I am playing the role of PC Flatfoot, a not so smart police officer who is trying to help the detective, alongside some other officers and ever a head chief. Me and the other year eights were challenged to make a poster, and a ticket, including the details of the production. Each of them will be judged and the best ones will be used as the official tickets and poster that will be used on the day. Here are the ones that I made! Which one do you like more? Make sure to let me know!

The Perfect Play

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog! For these last few weeks for PBL, we have been looking at making a play and preforming it. We have also brought this concept into writing, so I have decided to write my own play. We were challenged to chose a fairy tale, since that is what the production in based on, but we have to modernise it. I have chosen to recreate ‘The Ugly duckling” because it represents bullying based on looks, and I know that it is a real problem nowadays. It is about a girl who has Cancer, and how she gets bullied in school, but then, she beats cancer, and becomes beautiful, like the swan in the book. I have started on my Play, I hope you enjoy reading it! Who was your favourite character and why?

The Ugly Girl

CHARACTERS: TAYLA, ALICE, EMMA, LUNA & LAYLA

TAYLA (talking to herself) Okay, it’s just the first day of school, it can’t be that bad…right?

TAYLA (walking into school with a nervous look on her face)

(bell rings)

TAYLA Oh shoot! I’m late for class! (starts to run to class with her bag in tow)

TAYLA (busts into class and stutters) S-Sorry I’m la-

ALICE (interrupts and out of breath) Sorry I’m late Miss.

TAYLA & ALICE  (makes eye contact, Alice smiles warmly and they both take a seat)

(the whole class stares at shock)

EMMA (smirks) Hey there ugly! Go sit somewhere else before I throw up! (chuckles)

LUNA & LAYLA (laughs with Emma)

(the whole class joins in and laughs at Tayla, except for Tayla and Alice)

TAYLA (stutters) O-ok (Stands up, ashamed, and takes a seat at the very back of the class)

ALICE (Stands up and sits next to Tayla) Don’t listen to what they say, they’re just a bunch of idiots. I’m Alice BTW.

TAYLA (stutters) I-I’m T-T-Tayla.

(scene changes, after class, in the cafeteria)

ALICE So, Sorry if I’m being rude, but why don’t you have any hair?

TAYLA  (stutters with a sad face) Its b-because I have c-c-cancer

ALICE (shocked) OMG I am so so sorry.

TAYLA (stutters again, still sad) It’s ok-kay, there’s nothing we can do about it .

ALICE Well I-

EMMA (interrupts Alice, with a loud booming voice)THIS, is MY seat. Move NOW.

LUNA You heard her.

TAYLA (stands up and tries to walk away)

ALICE (Grabs Tayla’s hand and pulls her back down to her seat) No. Just because it’s ‘your seat’ doesn’t mean we have to move. We’re staying here.

EMMA (moves closer to Alice, becomes very intimidating) I said, Move.

ALICE Make me.

TAYLA (with a worried look, grabs Alice’s hand and forces her out of her seat while standing up) Ok, we’ll move (whispers to Alice) COME ON.

ALICE (gives in and scowls at Emma and her friends) Fine.

TAYLA & ALICE (both stand up and walk away to find a ew seat)

EMMA That’s right. Scram.

(scene changes, after school)

ALICE (sorrowfully) I’m sorry about Emma and her friends. I don’t get why they have to be so hard on you.

TAYLA (stutters) I kn-n-now, b-but how can we s-s-stop them?

ALICE (worriedly) …… I don’t know, but I’ll think of something.

TAYLA (realizing) Oh Shoot! I’m late!

ALICE (confused) Late for what?

TAYLA (explaining) I’m going to finish off my chemotherapy. So I’m going to have surgery today. If it is a success, then I won’t have cancer anymore!

ALICE (surprised and happy) OMG thats great! Im so so happy for you! I hope it goes well!

TAYLA Yea….Thanks! See ya tomorrow!

ALICE Bye!

(scene changes, the next day after the surgery)

ALICE (hopeful) TAYLA! How did it go?

TAYLA (excited) It was a success! I’m cancer free!

ALICE (excited) EEEEEEEEKKK! This is amazing?

TAYLA So, Im going to start to use fast hair growth shampoo, and hopefully I can grow my hair back!

ALICE (gasp) And we can have a makeover! We can get new clothes, pain your nails, and glam you up!

TAYLA (happy) OMG I love that idea, but first we gotta wait for my hair to grow back… and then-

EMMA (interrupts once again, and pushes Tayla and Alice aside) Move aside ugly rats, and let some real beauty through.

ALICE (helps Tayla up) Who is saying that you are ‘real beauty’?

EMMA (shocked and offended) You did not just say that? UGH

LAYLA (surprised) She is BEAUTIFUL. How could you ever say that. You clearly need your eyes checked, especially since they don’t even match.

EMMA, LAYLA & LUNA (they all laugh )

(scene changes, first day of school holidays, at Alice’s house)

(doorbell rings)

TAYLA Hi-

ALICE (shouts) HIII! COME INSIDE! (urges Tayla inside)

(Alice leads Tayla inside to Alice’s room)

ALICE ooo, you grew some of your hair back! Ok so, first we need to take off those bandages, and put some makeup on your skin. (takes out makeup kit and starts applying makeup)

(10 mins later)

ALICE Ok done. Now its time for your hair. Which do you prefer? Extensions or wigs?

TAYLA (unsure) uhhhhh, wigs?

ALICE Alright then. (places wig gently on Tayla’s head and straightens it) That looks realistic. Now remember to keep using that hair growth shampoo. Then when its long enough, we can turn your hair into looking like this! Its perfect! (grabs hairspray and starts spraying the wig). Now, closets. Take these and put them on.

TAYLA (Tayla grabs on the clothes, exits the room and changes. She comes back minutes later, looking stunning)

ALICE (shocked) OMG you look amazing! Keep the clothes, here is the makeup and hairspray. Now keep up your routines.

TAYLA (smiles, very happy and proud) Thanks!

(scene changes, now back at school, the first day back)

Fraction Pick-a-Path

Kia ora! Welcome back to my blog! For the last few weeks, my hub and I have been learning about fractions. For this week I have made a pick-a-path on adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.

If you don’t know, when you are adding or subtracting fractions, first you have to find a common denominator. To do this you must find a similarity between the two numbers, e.g 2/5 + 1/2. So you have 5 and 2 as the denominator. You can times 5 by 2 and 2 by 5 to get 10 (when finding a common denominator you must times the two numbers by different numbers that are more than 1 to get to the same number). So now you would use the 2 and 5 that you have used and times them by its current numerator. So you would multiply two by two, since you got the two from multiplying the five, and the five’s numerator is 2, which equals 4, since 2×2=4. And you would multiply five by one. , since you got the five from multiplying the two, and the two’s numerator is 1, which equals 5, since 5×1=5. So now you take the 10, and the 4 and 5 to make 4/10 and 5/10, so if you are doing adding them you add the numerator, but if you are subtracting, then you minus the two numerators. So if you are adding, 4 + 5 = 9, so the answer would be 9/10. But if you are subtracting, 5-4=1, so the answer would be 1/10.

If you are multiplying then all you need to do is multiply the numerators and detonators. e.g 1/3 x 2/6. You would need to do 1×2=2 and 3×6=18, so the answer would be 2/18, or 1/9 (to simplify just divide both numbers by 2, 2÷2=1 and 18÷2=9, so 1/9).

With this new infomation, feel free to answer my Pick-a-Path questions. I hope you enjoy!

How many questions did you get right?

G.E.M

Over the course of term one we have looked at the question: How can we help build a resilient community? We are using something called The Resilience Project to understand simple tricks to make our lives better.

I have learnt that the maker of The Resilience Project (also known as TRP) were inspired to start this journey because of his sister being diagnosed with a mental illness, so he decided to become a teacher, so that he, himself can try and find a cure, and improve both himself, and others. So he went to a small village in India. This village had no running water, so electricity and no beds in the middle of a desert with no grass. Everyone was poor, but yet, they were all so happy. This was because they practice something called G.E.M. G.E.M stands for Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. Gratitude is when you are grateful for the things and people you have in your life. Empathy is when you are being Empathetic to others, by relating to them, and showing compassion towards them. And lastly, Mindfulness is when you are present in the moment, and focused on the things you can feel, hear and see around you. Showing Mindfulness allows you to be calm and relaxed, so matter what you are doing.

Here is a video I made about G.E.M!

The whole school had a showcase evening to look at all the students’ creations and learn more about The Resilience Project.

Here is an invite I made:

For the showcase evening I worked with Three of my best friends, Sophie B, Selah and Kamryn.

We decided to create a video demonstrating Mindfulness and explaining G.E.M through a skit and we painted some rocks that relate to G.E.M. The point of these rocks was for people to take them and hide them around CH CH, and if you find one then you re hide them. We did this because the video was fun and entertaining to watch and easy to teach others. We made the rocks because it was a fun and easy way to remind others about G.E.M, or just to put a slime on their faces.

Here is my final creation:

I now know more about G.E.M is and how I can use it in my life to be happier. Throughout the creating process I feel like I did the skit in the video and presenting it really well. I could have been better at painting my rocks and making the sound quality better on the video. If I was to do this again, next time I would sharpie the outline of the words and pictured on the rock and I would put less words on the rock so that it is easier for others to read. I would also make sure that the quality of the video was better to hear and understand.

What was your favourite rock that we made? Please be sure to comment your answer!

Thank you for reading! Have a great day/night! Bye!

Perfect Pancakes

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog. This week is the start of lent, which means it is also Shrove Tuesday this week. At St Francis we decided to celebrate Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes! In lent it is tradition to give up meat and diary products. I learnt that pancakes are made of many diary products, which is why Pancakes are the food that we use to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. But there are also other actives you can do to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, like doing a pancake race. To do this you must only place a pancake into a frying pan and run from start to end while not dropping the pancake. Here is my poster, I hope you enjoy!

How do you celebrate Shrove Tuesday?

Terrific Netball Tricks!

Are you struggling to play Netball? Well look no further, this is the perfect place to learn a few tips and tricks on Netball for beginners. While making this I have realised that I am much better at defence than Attack, because in my opinion shooting it quite hard! But everyone is better at different things, so my personal favourite position is GK in seven aside or D in six aside. I hope you enjoy!

What have you learned from my tricks? What is your favourite position in Netball?

Super Saints!

Hello everyone, welcome back to my blog! This week my hub and I have been challenged to research about a saint and make a poster about him or her. I have chosen to make a poster about ST Francis of Assisi because he is the saint of my school.

Click here to go onto the poster. What Saint would you have chosen and why? What was your favourite fact about St Francis? I hope you enjoyed. Bye!

Super Shapes

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog! This week for maths me and my hub have been learning about different types of shapes. We were challenged with finding shapes around our classroom and identifying what types of shapes they were. This is what I found:

I hope you enjoyed! See you next time!
